This book provides an introduction to the history, founding principles, institutions, and activities of the EU and an overview of the 25 member States. It covers a gap in EU policy literature by addressing intersection among research, policy, and industry. The book includes a detailed description of the EU policies on research, innovation and technology by emphasizing common objectives of greater competitiveness and sustained (and sustainable) growth. The text originates from courses taught at Georgia Technical Institute (US), the University of Bologna (Italy), and the University of Ferrara (Italy). An Appendix includes distance-learning materials.
